103 cities have been awarded the EU Mission Label for their unwavering commitment to climate neutrality. But reaching this holy grail of energy transition is easier said than done. One only needs to look at Copenhagen which had to postpone its net zero target date after realising that the original aim of 2025 was no longer feasible.
The challenging nature of clean urban energy transition is pushing cities to test innovative concepts and technologies to achieve decarbonisation at scale. A Positive Energy District is a promising solution that more and more cities now see as a catalyst of an ambitious district transformation needed to reach climate objectives. At this year's Smart City Expo World Congress, BIPED contributed to several sessions to explain how PEDs can support cities in this endeavour.
Digital Solutions for Positive Energy Districts (4 November, European Commission Booth)
Shahrzad Pour of DTU explained how BIPED is using a blend of next-gen technologies, multi-stakeholder engagement and innovative energy frameworks to guide evidence-informed PED development in the Brabrand area of Aarhus, Denmark.
'Meet & Greet' the BIPED Consortium (5 November, OASC Booth)
Partners from DTU, OASC, Aarhus, VCS, and DRI talked to delegates about BIPED, showcasing its latest results, including the prototype Digital Twin platform available at https://bi-ped.civora.org/app/home.
Digital Twins for Climate-Neutral Cities: PEDs in Action Across Europe (6 November, Stage Clean Cities)
Shahrzad Pour took the stage again at SCEWC25, this time to give a specific example of BIPED's digital Twin, and how it simulates the solar potential of different buildings in Aarhus to provide users with insights into the profitiability and environmental impact of a rooftop PV installation.
And finally... Just like citizens are the greatest asset cities have, similarly people are the main driver of success in any project. This is certainly true of BIPED. We are blessed to have such a bright team committed to helping Aarhus with its energy transition by building a Digital PED Twin in Brabrand.
