As the new year begins, Europe continues its push toward a greener, more sustainable future. Among the most exciting developments are Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) and Positive Energy Communities (PECs), which are reshaping how we think about energy production, consumption, and sharing. These concepts bring a renewed focus on collaboration technology and community-driven solutions which are the perfect themes for Aarhus in Denmark, who is ringing in the new year by building a groundbreaking Positive Energy District. Innovative as its powered by a Local Digital Twin (LDT), developed as part of our BI-PED project to accelerate the energy transition.

Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are urban clusters designed to produce more renewable energy than they consume annually, with the surplus shared to support surrounding areas. In contrast, Positive Energy Communities (PECs) expand this vision beyond urban areas, focusing on collaborative energy solutions that empower communities. Both aim to advance sustainability, but they differ in scale and emphasis, with PEDs focusing on urban technology and PECs emphasising community participation and inclusivity.
The energy transition requires bold steps and innovative tools, and Local Digital Twins are emerging as game-changers. These virtual models integrate real-time data to optimise energy systems, simulate scenarios, and foster collaboration. In Aarhus, as part of the BIPED project, the Local Digital Twin will enable city planners and managers to visualise energy flows, test strategies, and engage stakeholders, ensuring the PED achieves energy positivity while adapting to future challenges. These efforts made by Aarhus’s show that collaboration, innovation, and technology are truly essential to making sustainable energy a reality.
As we all embrace the possibilities of a new year, initiatives like BIPED aim to inspire optimism for a cleaner, greener future. Positive Energy Districts and Communities are more than just energy concepts or energy goals, tthey represent a collective commitment to sustainability, resilience, and equity.
Our wish is to let 2025 be the year we all invest in solutions that empower communities, drive innovation, and make a meaningful impact. We hope you'll join us in our mission by subscribing for updates and opportunities at www.bi-ped.eu.
Together, let’s make this year a turning point in the energy transition.
